[Dabi spits out, moving to stand in front of Shoto, eyes narrowing in frustration. He wants to lift his arms and blast him with his blue flames, burn him up right where he sits. But wouldn't that be the most pathetic thing of all?
Dabi lets out a low growl, extinguishing his flames. He shouldn't have come here at all. Shoto, as always, is a waste of his time, and Dabi turns to leave. ]
[Pathetic?? The word makes his eyes narrow, a muscle clenched in his jaw pulsing. It shouldn't be so easy to get to him. After all, he'd asked for this, hadn't he? He'd dared him to come, and he was still doing it, pushing for something he didn't actually want.
But Dabi's here, isn't he? He's here, and they're looking at each other, lit by that blue fire, and for a moment Shouto wonders if he really will do it, and why that thought doesn't bother him nearly as much as it should. He'd never thought he was so willing to--
--well. Not that it matters, because Dabi's extinguishing that fire and turning to leave, and there's a strange feeling of disappointment in that, an ache unfulfilled. It shouldn't have been that easy. He doesn't want it to be that easy.]
I can't. I already told you that.
[All it takes is Shouto stepping down off the edge of his open room and down into the yard, and there's frost spreading along the ground, erupting into a wall of mirror-like ice blocking Dabi's path.]
Would it make you feel better if I fought back? Made you feel like I deserve it?
[ It's an out for Dabi because he doesn't really want this either. He's angry and aching and he wants to destroy something so badly, but... not Shoto. He could have before this so many times, but he hasn't. All of those damn kids are still alive.
It's an out he's glad for, but then Shoto stops him in his tracks, causing him to take a step back as a wall of ice shoots up in front of him, blocking his retreat. He turns, eyes angry as he looks at his brother. ]
Don't push it, Shoto. I'm telling you again, don't fucking push it.
[They are. They've all lived through their run-ins, and for all that Shouto hopes it's for a reason, he's just as confused by it as Dabi is. He shouldn't care. He's said over and over that he didn't care. That his past is dead, that Touya is gone, that he's not the person Shouto wants him to be--then why??
Shouto tenses a little at the words, but that ice is still standing, and he's not backing down.]
A little ice isn't going to stop you.
[The wall isn't that high, or that thick. Dabi's fire wouldn't take five seconds to melt it. So it begs the question, one that Shouto's asking before he can stop himself, voice quieter but no less aggressive for it.]
You aren't going to kill me, and you don't want to be Touya anymore. So why are you even here?
[ He knows he could melt the wall of ice in a matter of seconds, but somehow that's not the point of it. In the end, he didn't really come here to kill Shoto, or even to fight, and now that his brother has come down to join him, he doesn't want it going there. Especially not here.
The true reason he doesn't melt the wall is because of Shoto's question, even if it was only his anger that fueled him to come all the way over here. ]
It's not you I wanna kill, it's him. I just don't want you getting in the damn way.
Killing him isn't going to help. It won't undo any of this. It won't take away your scars, or mine. It won't get mom the last ten years of her life back, or the ten before that, and it won't...
[It won't make him Touya again, but it also won't kill Touya for good. But how is he supposed to say any of that? He doesn't even disagree with his feelings, he can't stand the old man, but...he knows that you can't change the past. All you can do is move forward.
He stops for a moment, just looking at Dabi, then shakes his head, expressing his words, or lack thereof. A touch of his left foot to the trail of ice melts the wall into steam and puddles, and the next words are quiet, none of the anger or belligerence in them. He sounds...lost, maybe. Alone.]
Believe me, it'll fucking help. He'll get to see everything he fucking did, right in front of his eyes, right before he dies. That's all I need.
[He knows it won't take anything back, but at least that vile tyrant will be gone. At least they'll be free, and the world will have one less false hero as their number one. He doesn't really care about the rest.
Dabi watches as the ice melts away, and again he wonders why he didn't just melt it himself and get the hell out of here. None of this was really about a fight though, in the end. Shouto was the one voicing his hatred for the man in the first place tonight. Maybe it's Dabi's frustration that brought him here. ]
That wouldn't look very good for you. UA student invites a murderous villain into his home.
He'll die still thinking he was right doing what he did. You know that. And I don't want him dead. I want him forgotten. I want to overtake him, and watch as everyone else in my generation passes him, too. I want him to realize that he didn't do anything at all, and that he was never anything more than a second-rate substitute number one for the five minutes it lasted.
[Yeah, he'll be gone, but what's the point if he dies thinking he'd done good? It was an infuriating thought, just like he was always so infuriating with his 'you'll appreciate what I did for you someday' attitude. No, he needs to realize that nothing he ever did mattered, that his children were better off without him, and even the world wouldn't miss him when he was gone.
But they can argue about that later. As long as he's staying. And he's not leaving. And Shouto's still waiting, blinking in surprise at Dabi's words before shaking his head and letting out a little huff that's not quite a laugh.]
I won't tell anyone if you won't.
[It's as close to a peace offering as he can get. He won't tell Fuyumi, or Natsuo. Even if he wants to. Not as long as Touya--Dabi--feels the way he does.]
